Procedure
A solution of 18.9 g. (0.1 mole) of 5-chlorothiosalicylic acid, 15.4 g. (0.1 mole) of α-chloroacetophenone and 8 g. (0.2 mole) of sodium hydroxide in 200 ml. of ethanol containing 45 ml. of water is heated to reflux for 2 hours. After removing one-fourth the alcohol under reduced pressure, the mixture is acidified with hydrochloric acid and the resulting precipitated product filtered, 5.0 g., m.p. 154°-156° C. The analytical sample has a melting point of 156°-157.5° C.
