A solution of 2-(p-methoxyphenethyl)-3-methyl-4-hydroxy-5-allylbenzofuran (0.65 gm, 2 mmoles) in ethanol (50 mL) was hydrogenated in a Parr hydrogenator in the presence of 5% palladium on charcoal at 50 psi for a period of 2 hours. The catalyst was filtered off and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to yield 2-(p-methoxyphenethyl)-3-methyl-4-hydroxy-5-propylbenzofuran, mp 77°-79° C.
