Procedure

A solution of 16.6 g of 7-chloro-2,3-dihydro-1,2-benzisothiazole-1,1-dioxide in 85 mls of dry dimethylformamide was cooled and treated with 10 g of potassium t-butoxideat such a rate that the temperature remained below 6° C. The resulting suspension was stirred at 5° to 10° C. for 30 minutes, treated with 6.1 mls of methyl iodide at 10° to 15°C. and stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. The mixture was poured into ice water and the resulting solid was filtered, washed with water anddried in vacuo at 50° C. for 1.5 hours to give 15.4 g of the title compound as a pinkish solid, m.p. 95°-97° C.
