10.0 g of N-[(2'-cyanobiphenyl-4-yl)methyl]-(L)-valine benzyl ester are dissolved in 150 ml of chloroform and treated with 8.2 ml of diisopropylethylamine at 0°. 2.4 ml of ethyl chloroformate are added and the mixture is heated to reflux for 3 hours. The reaction mixture is washed with 0.1M hydrochloric acid and brine, dried and concentrated. Amorphous product. TLC (system N3) Rf : 0.45.
