To a solution of (3-chloro-5-methoxy-pyrazin-2-yl)-methanol (100 mg, 0.57 mmol) in DCM (5 mL) was added SOCl2 (5 eq) at room temperature. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for an additional one hour. Solvent and volatile materials are removed in vacuo to dryness to give 110 mg of 3-chloro-2-chloromethyl-5-methoxy-pyrazine as an oil.
