To a solution of ethyl (2RS,3RS)-3-[4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl]-3-hydroxy-2-[3-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethoxy)benzyl]propanoate (2.55 g, 5.33 mmol) in ethanol (20 ml) was added 1N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (10.7 ml, 10.7 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hr. 1N Hydrochloric acid (30 ml) was added to acidify the reaction solution and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (100 ml). The extract was washed with water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and evaporated under reduced pressure to give the objective substance (2.30 g, 96%) as an oil.
