Potassium hydroxide (3.0 g) was dissolved in 20 ml of 2-propanol at 100° C. The solution was added with 2-propanol (10 ml) solution of ethyl (2E,4E,6E,10E)-3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2,4,6,10,14-hexadecapentaenoate obtained in Example 1, and stirred at the same temperature for 5 minutes. The reaction mixture was added to ice-water and washed with n-hexane. The solution was neutralized with 10% hydrochloric acid and extracted with n-hexane. The resulting organic layer was washed with saturated brine and dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was recrystallized from methanol to obtain 3.5 g of the title compound (yield 51%) as a yellow crystal.
