Procedure

The o-phenylenediamine obtained in step B (1.0 g,3.7 mmol) in water (20 cm3) was treated with concentrated hydrochloric acid (1.7 cm3) at room temperature. After stirring for 15 minutes more water (10 cm3) was added and the mixture cooled in an ice/salt bath to ~0° C. A solution of sodium nitrite (0.544 g, 7.9 mmol) in water (5.5 cm3) was added dropwise, with stirring, maintaining the temperature at ≤0° C. When the addition was complete the reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 30 minutes and then at room temperature for a further 2 hours. The mixture was extracted several times with ethyl acetate and the combined extracts washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated leaving 6-(1-methyl-5-trifluoromethyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yloxy)benzotriazole as a buff solid m.p. 129°-131° C.
