A mixture of 0.41 g (0.8 mmol) of 1-(6-iodohexyl)-2,3-bis(phenylmethoxy)benzene, 0.18 g (0.74 mmol) of 5-chloro-2,4-dihydroxypropylbenzoic acid methyl ester and 0.22 g (1.6 mmol) of potassium carbonate in 15 mL of acetone was stirred at reflux for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated to an oil. Chromatography on 30 g of silica gel and elution with 10% ethyl acetate-hexane gave 0.31 g (68% yield) of 5-chloro-2-hydroxy-4-[6-[2,3-bis(phenylmethoxy)phenyl]hexyloxy]-3-propylbenzoic acid methyl ester as an oil.
