Procedure
16.2 g (63.5 millimoles) of 6-aminoacetyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,1,4,4-tetramethylnaphthalene in 250 ml of methanol and 59 ml of 2 N hydrochloric acid were hydrogenated with 2.9 g of 10% strength palladium on active carbon at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure. The reaction mixture was filtered over Celite and the filtrate was evaporated down. The residue was stirred with ether and a few drops of methanol and the precipitated crystals were filtered off under suction. After drying, 5.8 g of 6-aminoacetyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,1,4,4-tetramethylnaphthalene hydrochloride remained. The structure was determined by H-NMR spectroscopy.
