Propiophenone (6.7 g, 50 mmol) was added dropwise to a solution of 2-methylphenylmagnesium chloride (30 ml of a 2.0 M solution in diethyl ether) and dry THF (50 ml) under a nitrogen atmosphere. When the addition was complete the reaction mixture was heated at reflux temperature for 5 h. Excess of a saturated ammonium chloride solution was added and the mixture was extracted with diethyl ether (2×100 ml). The combined organic extracts were dried over potassium carbonate and the solvent was evaporated in vacuo to give 10.4 g (92%) of 1-(2-methyl phenyl)-1-phenyl-1- propanol. TLC: rf=0.50 (SiO2 ; n-heptane/THF=7:3).
