Procedure
The ester prepared in Example 35 (0.6 g, 1.3 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (10 ml) and a 12 N sodium hydroxide solution (0.5 ml) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 5 h. A concentrated hydrochloric acid solution was added with cooling on an ice-bath until pH 1 and dichloromethane (300 ml) was added. The resulting emulsion was dried over sodium sulphate ant the solvent evaporated in vacuo to give a residue which was agitated with acetone. This afforded 0.3 g (50%) of the title compound as a solid.
