Procedure

To an ice-cold mixture of 2-(3-bromophenoxy)ethanol (15) (16.06 g, 74.0 mmol) and triethylamine (9.12 g, 90.13 ml) in anhydrous CH2Cl2 (120 ml) under argon was slowly added neat methanesulfonyl chloride (6 ml, 77.2 mmol) and the reaction mixture stirred at 0° C. for 15 min. A precipitate formed after the addition was complete. The mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was dissolved in EtOAc, washed twice with water, once with brine, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure. 2-(3-Bromophenoxy)ethyl methanesulfonate (16) was isolated as a brown oil and used in the next synthetic step without further purification. Yield (21.32 g, 98%): 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.16 (t, J=7.8 Hz, 1H), 7.11-7.14 (m, 1H), 7.07 (m, 1H), 6.39 (ddd, J=7.6, 2.5, 1.8 Hz, 1H), 4.56 (m, 2H), 4.22 (m, 2H), 3.08 (s, 3H).
