To a solution of 6-bromo-2-chlorobenzothiazole (3 g, 12.1 mmol) in ethanol (50 mL) was added triethylamine (5.04 mL, 36.3 mmol) and 1-cyclopentylpiperazine (1.86 g, 12.1 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated at reflux for 16 h and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was extracted with ethyl acetate and the combined organic extracts were washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 4.3 g (99%) of 6-bromo-2-(4-cyclopentylpiperazin-1-yl)benzothiazole.
