Procedure
A solution of methyl 4,4-dimethyl-2-oxocyclohexanecarboxylate (0.5 g, 2.7 mmol, 1 eq), 4-bromopyridin-2-amine (0.51 g, 2.97 mmol, 1.1 eq) and PPA in 1,2-dichloroethane was stirred at 80° C. for 4 hours. After it was cooled to rt, the reaction mixture was quenched with saturated Na2CO3 and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×50 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. After filtration and concentration, the residue was purified by silica gel chromatography to give the desired product.
