Procedure
A mixture of dimethyl 2-aminoterephthalate (3.0 g, 14.4 mmol), 3-methylbutanenitrile (1.2 g, 14.4 mmol), and saturated HCl solution in dioxane (20 mL) in sealed tube was stirred at 100° C. overnight. After it was cooled to room temperature, the reaction mixture was poured into water (50 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×20 mL). The combined organic layer was concentrated and the residue was purified by silica gel chromatography give the desired product. MS (ESI): 260 (MH+).
