To a solution of tert-butyl glycinate hydrochloride (4.00 g) and triethylamine (3.33 mL) in ethanol (20 mL) was added 4-thioxo-1,3-thiazolidin-2-one (2.65 g), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hr. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, water was added to the residue, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane) to give the title compound (2.70 g).
