A mixture of 1-methyl-1H-indole-6-carboxylic acid hydrazide (2.8 g, 14.8 mmol), potassium hydroxide (0.91 g, 16.3 mmol) and methanol (50 ml) was stirred at room-temperature for 30 min. Carbon disulfide (2.25 g, 29.6 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred for 15 h at reflux. The mixture was allowed to cool to room-temperature, water was added, pH was adjusted to 3 by adding concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid. The crystalline product was isolated by filtration and washed with water. Yield 2.75 g (80%).
