Procedure
To a stirred mixture of 2,2-dimethyl-4-oxo-4-phenylbutanoic acid (1.1 g, 5.3 mmol) and potassium carbonate (0.88 g, 6.4 mmol) in DMSO (6.4 mL) was added methyl iodide (0.68 g, 4.80 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 15 h. The reaction mixture was diluted with water (100 mL) and diethyl ether (100 mL). The organic layer was then washed successively with water, saturated sodium bicarbonate, 1 M HCl, water and finally saturated brine. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to provide the title compound which was subsequently used without further purification. MS: m/z=221 (M+1).
