(Bromomethyl)benzene (3.81 g, 22.26 mmol) was added to methyl 2-hydroxy-5-{[(4-methylphenyl)sulfonyl]oxy}benzoate (may be prepared as described in Description 36; 2.87 g, 8.90 mmol) and the resulting mixture was refluxed overnight. After cooling, the resulting precipitate was filtered and the filtrate was evaporated. The crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with a 4:1 mixture of hexane:ethyl acetate to yield the title compound as a colourless oil. 2.7 g.
