Procedure
Cesium carbonate (11.77 g, 36.1 mmol) and 1-(bromomethyl)-4-fluorobenzene (1.50 ml, 12.04 mmol) were added to a solution of 5-formyl-2-hydroxybenzoic acid (2 g, 12.04 mmol) in dimethylformamide (100 m) at room temperature. The mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture was filtered, the dimethylformamide was evaporated and the residue was diluted with ethyl acetate (100 ml) and washed with water (3×50 ml). The organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and evaporated under reduced pressure to give an oil which solidified on standing. The solid was triturated with an 8:1 mixture of hexane/ethyl acetate. The solid was filtered and dried in air under vacuum to yield the title compound as a white solid. 4.09 g.
