Procedure

To (3-bromo-4-methoxy-phenyl)-acetic acid (24 g, 97.9 mmol) in ethanol (240 mL) was added thionyl chloride (78 mL, 107.7 mmol) and the reaction was stirred at room temperature for 1.5 hours. Once no starting material was seen by analytical LCMS, saturated NaHCO3 (aq.) was added until the reaction was basic. The mixture was extracted twice with dichloromethane and the combined organic layers were washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated to give the title compound.
