2-Cyclopropyl-6-(trifluoromethyl)nicotinaldehyde (130 mg, 0.604 mmol) was diluted with nitromethane (229 μL, 4.23 mmol) followed by the addition of methylamine hydrochloride (24.5 mg, 0.363 mmol) and sodium acetate (29.7 mg, 0.363 mmol). After stirring for 4 hours, the reaction was loaded onto silica gel and eluted with 5% ethyl acetate/hexanes to 50% ethyl acetate/hexanes to yield (E)-2-cyclopropyl-3-(2-nitrovinyl)-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine (26 mg, 0.101 mmol, 16.7% yield).
