Procedure
A solution of (2-methyl-4-(p-tolyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro[1]benzothieno[2,3-b]pyridin-3-yl)bromomethane (0.309 g; 0.8 mmol) in trimethylphosphite (8 mL) was heated at reflux for 18 h. The volatiles were removed under reduced pressure and the remaining residue was used in the next step without further purification.
