A solution of 4-chloro-3,5-dimethyl-benzaldehyde (6.04 g, 35.8 mmol) and (R)-2-methylpropane-2-sulfinamide (4.78 g, 39.4 mmol) in toluene (110 mL) was treated with titanium(IV) isopropoxide (15.74 mL, 53.7 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 24 hours. It was then quenched with 10% aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution (100 mL) and filtered through Celite. The filter cake was washed with Et2O (250 mL). The organic layers were washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. The crude was purified by chromatography on silica gel (cyclohexane/EtOAc).
