A mixture of 2-chloro-N-methyl-5-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidin-4-amine (0.5 g, 2.36 mmol), 4-bromo-2-methoxyaniline (0.72 g, 0.38 mmol) and p-toluene sulphonic acid (0.49 g, 2.6 mmol) in dioxane (10 mL) was heated at 100° C. for 2 h. The mixture was cooled, filtered and the solid washed with dioxane. The solid was dried in a vacuum oven to give crude N2-(4-bromo-2-methoxyphenyl)-N4-methyl-5-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidine-2,4-diamine (1.31 g) which was used in the next step without any further purification.
