Procedure

In a 40 mL vial equipped with a stir bar was placed iron powder (586 mg, 10.5 mmol), ethanol (12 mL) and water (3.8 mL). The mixture was heated to 85° C. in an oil bath and then I-270 (1.05 g, 3.00 mmol) was added and the reaction was continued at 85° C. for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and filtered through Celite. To the filtrate was added water (60 mL) and extractions were performed with ethyl acetate (2×60 mL). The organic portions were combined, washed with brine (60 mL), dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to produce 862 mg of I-271 as a pale orange viscous oil in 89% yield. MS (APCI+): 324.1 (M+1); LC-MS: 97%.
