Procedure
To a solution of 7.0 g (19 mmoles) of α-(bromomethyl)-6-chloro-α-(2,2,2-trichloroethyl)-3-pyridinemethanol in 200 ml of acetonitrile was added 10 g (0.07 mole) of powdered anhydrous K2CO3. The slurry was stirred for five minutes, filtered and the filtrate concentrated in vacuo, giving 5 g of crude product. Recrystallization from hexane yielded 3.6 g (66%) of product, m.p. 65°-67° C.
