A solution of 5 g (0.022 moles) 1-methyl-3,4-dichloro-5-(2-hydroxyethylthio)pyrazole and 2.52 g (0.022 moles) methane sulfonyl chloride in 100 ml methylene chloride was stirred at room temperature for two days. To that mixture, 2.4 g (3.3 ml) triethylamine was added. The reaction mixture was then stirred over the weekend. The mixture was filtered and the filtrate was washed with water, then dried over magnesium sulfate, and then cooled with dry ice. Stripping of the solvent, followed by chromatography on silica gel, eluting with 5% ethyl acetate/methylene chloride gave 5.1 g of the product as a viscous yellow oil.
