18 g of SOCl2 is added, at 80°, to a suspension of 28.9 g of 2-ethoxy-5-(trans-4-propyl-cyclohexyl)-benzamide [obtainable, for example, by reaction of trans-1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4-propyl-cyclohexane with chloroform/KOH to give 2-ethoxy-5-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)-benzaldehyde, oxidation to the acid, reaction with SOCl2 to give the chloride and reaction with NH3 ] in 100 ml of toluene. After the mixture has been stirred at 80° for 6 hours, cooled and poured into water, 2-ethoxy-5-(trans-4-propyl-cyclohexyl)-benzonitrile of m.p. 32° is obtained.
