Procedure

A mixture of 2.25 g of ethyl 4-chloro-6,8-dimethoxy-1,7-naphthyridin-3-carboxylate and 1.2 g of p-chlorophenylhydrazine in 180 ml of xylene is heated at reflux overnight, then cooled and extracted with 1N sodium hydroxide (300 ml). The aqueous alkali phase is separated, washed with ether and neutralized with 20 g of ammonium chloride to precipitate a solid. The solid is collected and washed with ethanol to yield 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-6,8-dimethoxy-pyrazolo[4,3-c][1,7]naphthyridin-3(5H)-one, m.p. 318°-321°.
