A solution of 4-iodo-N,N-dimethyl-1H-imidazole-1-sulfonamide (3.0 g, 10 mmol) (R. M. Turner, J. Org. Chem. (1991), 56, 5739-5740) in dichloromethane (40 mL) was treated with ethyl magnesium bromide (3.0M in diethyl ether, 3.3 mL) over 5 minutes, stirred for 30 minutes, treated with 6-methoxy-5-nitro-1-tetralone (2.6 g, 11.8 mmol), stirred for 16 hours, treated with ammonium chloride solution and extracted with dichloromethane. The extract was dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated to provide the desired compound.
