Procedure

A solution of 200 g of a 20.0 wt. % solution of styrene-co-1-vinylimidazole-co-1-vinyl-3-benzylimidazolium chloride (50/40/10) (Compound F-5) in DMF was further quatemized with 3.2 g of 2-chloroethanol by stirring and heating at 100° C. for 18 hr. The reaction mixture was cooled and the polymer precipitated into diethyl ether with rapid stirring. The flaky precipitate was washed well with diethyl ether and dried in a vacuum oven.
