To a stirred mixture of 14 g of 2,4-bis(4-tert-butylphenyl)-6-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine, 10.8 g of anhydrous potassium carbonate, 0.47 g of potassium iodide, and 90 mL of acetone was added 3.7 mL (4,2 g) of ethyl chloroacetate. The mixture was stirred at reflux for 3 hr, and then cooled to room temperature. The solids were removed by filtration and washed with methylene chloride. The product was crystallized from the combined filtrate, washed with cold acetone, and dried in vacuo to give 12.5 g of 2,4-bis(4-tert-butylphenyl)-6-(2-hydroxy-4-ethoxycarbonylmethoxyphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine as a near white powder. The structure was verified by 1H-NMR spectroscopy.
