Procedure
A solution of 5.9 g, (17.8 mmol) of the above ketone in a mixture of dichloromethane (60 mL) and 30% hydrobromic acid in acetic acid (27 mL) was stirred for 1.5 h at room temperature and then the dichloromethane was evaporated at reduced pressure and the reaction mixture was poured onto 200 mL of an ice/water mixture. The precipitate formed was filtered off, and dried under vacuum to provide 1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-phenyl-1-ethanone as beige crystals, m.p. 107 to 108° C.
