Procedure

A solution of 1,2,4-triazole (0.69 g) in trifluoroacetic acid (3.12 ml) was added to 2,2'-[5-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-1,3-phenylene]-di(2-methylpropiononitrile), (0.27 g), and the resulting solution was stirred at room temperature for 18 hr and then evaporated to dryness. The residue was treated with aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was dried and evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by flash chromatography using methanol (1% by volume) in dichloromethane as eluant, to give 2,2'-(5-[1-methyl-1-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)ethyl]-1,3-phenylene)di(2-methylpropiononitrile), which was characterised as the hydrochloride salt, mp 185°-188°.
