Procedure
To propane-1-sulfonic acid (2-fluoro-3-hydroxymethyl-phenyl)-amide (17, 0.20 g, 0.81 mmol) in 5.0 mL of tetrahydrofuran, Dess-Martin periodinane (0.377 g, 0.89 mmol) was added. The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 10 minutes, then poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and the filtrate concentrated under vacuum. The resulting material was purified by silica gel column chromatography eluting with 20% ethyl acetate in hexane. Appropriate fractions were combined and concentrated under vacuum to provide the desired compound as a white solid (18, 100 mg, 50.0%). MS (ESI) [M−H+]+=244.1.
