To a stirred suspension of lithium aluminium hydride (3.00 g, 79.1 mmol) in dry THF (100 mL) at 0° C. was added a solution of (R)-pantolactone (10.30 g, 79.14 mmol) in THF (100 mL). The mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature and was then heated to reflux for a further 2 h. The mixture was cooled to 0° C. and the reaction was quenched with saturated aqueous Na2SO4 until a white solid precipitated. The solid was filtered off, the filter cake was washed with THF (2×60 mL) and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound as a pure colorless oil.
