A solution of 1.8 g (4.70 mmol) of tert-butyl 3-tert-butoxycarbonylmethyl-5-chloro-2-oxo-2,3-dihydrobenzimidazole-1-carboxylate (VIIg) in 100 ml of 2% trifluoroacetic acid in dichloromethane was stirred at room temperature for 16 h. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was dried in vacuo. Yield: 1.32 g (100%) of colorless solid
