Methyl(3R,4R)-4-{[(benzyloxy)carbonyl]amino}-1-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperidine-3-carboxylate (Intermediate 41) (650 mg, 1.93 mmol) was reacted with methanesulfonyl chloride (0.18 mL, 2.32 mmol) in the presence of triethylamine (0.38 mL, 2.7 mmol) as described for Intermediate 6. The crude product was used without delay for the next step.
