Procedure

A mixture of 2-(2-naphthylthiomethyl)glutaric acid (28.8 g), methanol (300 ml), and p-toluenesulfonic acid (0.9 g) was stirred at 40° C. for 2.5 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo, and water was added to the resulting residue. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate, washed with water, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was recrystallized from isopropyl ether to give 27.4 g of 2-(2-methoxycarbonylethyl)-3-(2-naphthylthio)propionic acid.
