To a solution of diethyl 3-butyl-2,5-dioxo-4-imidazolylphosphonate (0.49 g, 1.72 mmol) in acetonitrile (5 mL) was added lithium chloride (0.15 3.47 mmol) and then DBU (0.52 mL, 3.47 mmol). This mixture was stirred for 5 minutes under N2. Methyl 4-[(2-butyl-5-formyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]-3-chlorobenzoate (0.48 g, 1.43 mmol) in acetonitrile (5 mL) was added and the mixture stirred for 4 days. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the isomers separated by chromatography eluting with (1-5)% methanol in chloroform.
