PROCEDURE

17β-Cyano-9α,17α-dihydroxyandrost-4-en-3-one (I, EXAMPLE 85, 313 mg) is added to sulfuric acid (57%, 5 ml) at 2° and is stirred at 2°-5° for several hr and then overnight at 22°; solids formed. Water (10 ml) is added at 10°, the mixture stirred for 15 min, the solids collected and air dried to give the title compound, NMR (CDCl3 /DMSO-d6 ; 5/1) 5.7, 5.6, 1.4 and 0.9 δ.
