A solution of 2-Amino-α-cyano-α-(2-furanyl-methyl)-1,6-dihydro-5-nitro-6-oxo-4-pyrimidineacetic acid, ethyl ester (5.0 g) in 1N NaOH (200 mL) is stirred at room temperature for 2 h. The reaction mixture is acidified (pH 1) by the dropwise addition of conc HCl and is stirred at room temperature for 2 min. The precipitate is collected by filtration, washed with water, and dried to give 2-Amino-α-(2-Furanylmethyl)-1,6-dihydro-5-nitro-6-oxo-4-pyrimidineacetonitrile (3.02 g 73%). ##STR21##
