Procedure

As in Example 16, a solution of 31.2 g of [S-(R*,R*)]-alpha-hydroxy-N-[1-ethyl-4-(3-pyridinyl)butyl]benzeneacetamide in 175 ml of 6N HCl was treated with 10 mL of conc. HCl and then was heated at reflux for 42 hours. The normal work up furnished 16.4 g of (S)-alpha-ethyl-3-pyridinebutanamine, (bp 95°-98° C./0.1 mm); [α]D25 +11.75° (c, 1.0, MeOH).
