As in Example 111, 6-methoxy-3-pentyl-2-benzo[b]thiophenecarboxaldehyde (7.37 g) and (carbomethoxymethylene)triphenylphosphorane (9.7 g) in dichloromethane (100 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 42 hours. Crystallization of the crude reaction product, obtained by using the normal work up, from hexane gave 7.6 g of (E)-3-(6-methoxy-3-pentyl-benzo[b]thien-2-yl)-2-propenoic acid methyl ester, mp 49°-50° C. Anal. Calcd for C18H22O3S: C, 67.90; H, 6.96: S, 10.07 Found: C, 68.21; H, 6.80; S, 10.22
