To a stirred solution of 3-(1-hydroxyethyl)thiophene (61.4 g, 0.48 mol) in carbon tetrachloride (550 ml) was added N-bromosuccinimide (89.4 g, 0.504 mol) portionwise over 11/2 hours at 40° C.
