Reaction Steps
3.4 ml of 15N sodium hydroxide solution are added to 9.1 g (23.6 mmol) of ethyl 3-(2-benzenesulphonamidoindan-5-yl)-crotonate in 100 ml of ethanol and the mixture is boiled for 1 hour. The sodium salt is precipitated on cooling. It is filtered off with suction and dissolved in water. The free acid is precipitated by adding hydrochloric acid and is recrystallised from isopropanol.
