Procedure
A solution of 4-(3-chloro-4,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-thiazole-2-carboxamide (1.58 g) (Example 1c) in pyridine (9 ml) was cooled to 0° C. and treated with trifluoroacetic anhydride (4 ml) whilst maintaining the internal temperature below 10° C. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 10 min, then cooled and treated dropwise with water (45 ml) whilst maintaining the internal temperature below 30° C. The precipitated solid was collected by filtration and dried under vacuum at 60° C. Recrystallisation from dichloromethane-ether afforded 4-(3-chloro-4,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-thiazole-2-carbonitrile (1.25 g), m.p. 147°-149° C.
