Procedure
A mixture of 3-nitro-4-phenyl-6-trifluoromethylquinoline (2.0 g), stannous chloride dihydrate (5.0 g) and conc. hydrochloric acid (20 ml) was stirred for 1 hr. at 100° C. The mixture was neutralized with 6N-sodium hydroxide solution and extracted with chloroform. The chloroform layer was washed with water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then distilled to remove the solvent. The residue was recrystallized from a mixture of isopropyl ether and hexane to give 3-amino-4-phenyl-6-trifluoromethylquinoline (1.46 g, 80 %). m.p. 107°-108° C.
